What is Fitzgerald trying to achieve when he opens this chapter?

When Fitzgerald opens this chapter, nick is at gatsby’s party that he has been personally invited to.He lists names to show how many people came to gatsby’s party the guests from socialites and debutantes to the famous and the infamous,  These people that nick listed were generally rich and don’t have much interest in gatsby himself. Most of them hadn’t known gatsby but only known the rumours.Listing all the guest’s names together gives the illusion that there is no social class when it comes to attending gatsby’s parties old and new money hang out. The fact that we don’t know anything about his life shows he has a whole theatre of people around him acting like he knows them and them acting as if they know him. his life is actually empty. the names are characterless to prove this to us
